Bob Wall and his wife Nina were uncompromising dog lovers.
A home wouldn’t be a home without a dog to live with, but it wasn’t the fact that they had six dogs as part of the family that worried visitors — it was their preferred breed: pit bulls.
Part of the family
The six beautiful dogs are part of a pack and have been trained since they were puppies.
Besides playing and snoring, one of their favorite activities was following their 4-year-old daughter around the house and the large backyard. One day, Bob and his wife had a great idea for a video.
Disliked stereotypes
It’s simple, but hopefully powerful.
The goal was to make a spectacle of their evening feeding. The couple hated the stereotype that these dogs were inherently “bad.” They wanted the public to know that they were, in fact, just big, gentle dogs. But little did they know that their plan would quickly backfire.
Prove the difference
Nina put Bob’s phone on the stand and pressed record.
His little angel stood before the hungry flock and clapped her hands, a ritual long held and well known to the dogs. Within a second of her little hands being clasped together, the dogs responded in unison.
like a boss
They quickly put their bottoms on the floor and sat down quietly and at attention.
When mealtime came, they were ready to feast, but the two of them were distracted. But with the girl’s firm command, they quickly got in line. Bob couldn’t help but smile, feeling proud of his daughter’s natural authority.
Her own way
The blonde angel then picked up a large container of dog food and spread it out on the floor.
All the while, her gentle voice kept saying, “Wait, wait.” The dog’s eyes were fixed on the nearby meal and little strings of drool were dripping from its mouth. What happened next left viewers speechless.
Draw
“It’s time for the countdown,” Nina said.
But the girl hadn’t yet finished another step in her routine: She smoothed the pile of food into a flat circle to ensure “fair” distribution. The dogs remained mostly still throughout the process. But what was their reaction when they were finally given the food?
In a hurry?
“Three. Two,” my daughter said, prolonging the wait in only a four-year-old way.
By the time she got to “1,” Bob felt like running into the mountain, but he didn’t jump on her or try to knock her over, which was not how one might imagine he would react.
Disciplined formation
The dogs happily stepped forward and began eating in a circle.
They moved politely around the little alpha girl, barely poking her. This was exactly what Bob and his wife wanted to show the world. They enthusiastically uploaded the video. But the results were disastrous.
Backfire
The video didn’t just go viral, racking up over 15 million views in just a few weeks.
Bob’s joy was quickly dashed by the comments section. He was prepared for resistance, but not this much. And worst of all, the threats.
I can’t accept it
Most of the reactions from viewers included words like “irresponsible,” “dangerous” and “negligent.”
Some even went so far as to say it was a possible murder case. They should call the police and take his daughter away. Bob sighed and slammed his laptop shut. Are people blind?
Not the owner or breeder
The problem wasn’t the breed.
It was people! Irresponsible breeders and bad training were to blame. Any breed can turn into a nightmare. The evidence was right in front of our eyes, but no one wanted to see it for themselves. So what were Bob and his wife going to do?
Don’t give up
That was an unacceptable fact.
All they could do was let the video exist and hope that it would bring about some change. But that didn’t mean they were going to crawl under a rock and change their ways. They were sure of one thing besides still being pit bull fanatics.
The Right Way
They continue to show the world that if used right, pit bulls can be some of the best canine companions in the world.
She will continue to demand dinner time and play in the backyard. It will be a long battle, but they have taken the first step toward progress.
