Curiosity
“What’s up, boy? What are you looking at?” he asked with concern. Mike couldn’t move his dog, Rover, away from the wall in the living room. Over the past few days, he’d sat there intermittently.
There was a time when the dog clawed at the wall. It became increasingly frustrating for Mike. What was happening needed to be investigated. Installing a security camera became a necessity for him.
What Was Happening
Rover, his Jack Russell, wagging his tail with exuberance, was usually excited and upbeat at every opportunity. Mike could not figure out what was bothering him now.
As he sat at the wall, Rover had become very quiet. Almost as if he were listening to something. The dog seemed transfixed, but what had captivated him? In just a few minutes, Mike would find out.
Single Man
Mike Robertson, an unmarried bachelor, always kept a pet companion despite not having anyone in his life. After moving from Idaho to Portland, Oregon, to get a job, he became lonely. Additionally, his two children were essential to him.
It seemed to him that going to an animal shelter was the obvious thing to do. As a result of this, he adopted Macy as a pet to keep him company.
His First Love
He had a great companion, Macy, who waited for him each day at the window when he returned from work. Sitting on his lap all night while he fed her was her favorite part.
In the four years Mike had Macy, tragedy struck. It was unknown to Mike that she already had a heart condition, and she just suddenly fell ill one day and never recovered.
Heartbroken
The shock had left Mike devastated. His heart ached for Macy, and it was so painful for her to suffer like that. It wasn’t uncommon for him to cry himself to sleep at night. There was one thing that soothed his heart, however.
It was all he could do to make Macy’s life wonderful, and he knew she was grateful to him for that. However, Mike was now alone once more.
Back To The Shelter
After mourning Macy for a few months, Mike returned to the shelter, and this time, he was attracted to a dog. As an animal lover, Mike adopted the dog who had wagged his tail at him.
The two became best friends after Mike named him Rover. Mike felt the love emanating from Rover, even though Rover wasn’t there to replace Macy.
Love Was Back
Despite his age, Rover was a very playful and happy dog. Taking walks in the park was one of his favorite things to do. He showed appreciation by jumping up on his owner as if praising him for adopting him from a shelter.
The choice of Rover had been great for Mike, and he was happy that he had chosen him. But Mike noticed Rover’s behavior changing soon afterward.
Very Strange
The story began one evening when Mike returned home from work to find Rover staring at the wall in the living room. I’m here, boy. I’m back,” he said.
There was no interest from Rover. Just staring intently at the wall, he kept sitting there. It was when Mike served him his dinner that he moved away.
What Was There?
When Rover ate, he would return to the wall to stare at it again. This behavior caught Mike’s attention; he thought it strange.
Even when it came to going to bed, Rover was not interested. It seemed as if he was guarding something all night as he sat by the wall. There was a growing sense of concern from Mike.
He Had Changed
The experience was unlike anything Mike had ever experienced before. Rover was no longer the same as he used to be. Those days when Rover eagerly greeted him at the door when he returned from work are long gone.
The only thing he would find daily was Rover seated beside the wall. There were even days when the dog would cry a little bit. There was something wrong with Mike. A visit to the vet was for Rover.
Taken To The Vet
But when the vet examined Rover, they discovered that there was absolutely nothing wrong with Mike’s furry friend.
Rover was given a clean bill of health. Mike was puzzled. He really thought something was up with Rover. But he had proven them all wrong. He didn’t know what to think anymore. What was bothering his dog?
Fascinated
As soon as they got home, Rover rushed over to the wall again and began sniffing the area. Mike wondered why Rover was so fascinated with that particular area in the house.
He spent so many hours there. It was then that Mike thought about something. It could be that he was hearing insects crawling around in the wall.
Insects?
All houses have insects, he thought. It could be that Rover was intrigued by them crawling around through the walls. It made sense. Dogs had a heightened sense of hearing and could normally hear things that humans could not.
Mike felt like he had finally solved the problem. But when Rover suddenly began barking and howling, he knew it was far from over.
The Unexpected Howling
Rover’s sudden howling and barking jolted Mike from his assumption that it was just insects in the wall. It was a sound of distress and urgency, unlike anything Mike had heard from his usually cheerful companion.
As Rover’s howling grew louder, Mike couldn’t ignore the possibility that something more sinister might be going on. He approached the wall cautiously, trying to listen for any unusual sounds. But he couldn’t hear anything.
Very Frustrated
At this point, Mike was getting very frustrated with the situation. He wanted Rover back, but something in the walls was keeping him glued to the area.
And everything was made worse when Mike’s two children visited him. They always looked forward to playing with Rover, but now the dog just wanted to sit by the wall.
