Be Careful
He stepped back cautiously and said, “Ma’am, that’s not a cat.” Holding his clipboard up as a shield, his brows tightened with concern. “I need you to do everything I say, exactly as I say it.”
Taking a few more careful steps back, he added, “Please don’t leave the room suddenly. Just walk away slowly and close the door behind you. No sudden movements.” But Mrs. McKinley didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation—at least not yet.
Not a Cat
The animal turned sharply, fangs bared, hissing from the vet’s table. The sound sent a chill through the room.
“Listen to me, Mrs. McKinley. That is not a cat,” the vet repeated urgently.
Up to that moment, it hadn’t even occurred to her that the small, brown-furred animal she’d brought in wasn’t what she thought it was. She had brushed off every odd behavior. But now, a deeper concern began to grow—was her entire neighborhood at risk?
A New Addition
For Jazmine McKinley, this mysterious little creature seemed like the perfect new addition to her home. Her husband Denis often said the house felt too quiet without pets around.
Their loyal dog had passed of old age a few months earlier, and their only remaining pet was a calm and quiet cat named Moople. So when Jazmine noticed a strange but adorable animal hiding in the nearby park, she thought fate had intervened.
Clearing Her Mind
Jazmine, a longtime Omaha resident in her early fifties, was out on her usual morning walk. Lately, she’d been feeling a bit down—coping with the loss of their dog and adjusting to the quiet after their youngest child had gone off to college.
Her morning walks helped her reflect and clear her mind. But today, something unusual was waiting for her.
Approaching the Animal
At first glance, the animal seemed small and harmless. Its coat was soaked from the earlier rain, and its long ears were drooping. It looked lost and vulnerable.
Moved by compassion and unaware of its true nature, Jazmine approached it carefully. In her heart, she was already imagining how well it would fit into their home.
A Grumpy Stranger
When she called out softly, the animal responded with a low growl. “Someone’s not in the mood today,” she said playfully.
She and Denis had already discussed the possibility of adopting another pet. Surely, he wouldn’t mind if she helped this one. But Jazmine had no idea that what she was carrying was not a typical stray.
Trying to Help
Gently scooping up the shivering creature, Jazmine wrapped it in her jacket and hurried back to her car. She only lived a few blocks from the park.
Despite the growling, scratching, and occasional attempts to bite, she remained calm and reassuring. “I’m just trying to help,” she whispered, hoping the little animal would settle down.
A Quiet Introduction
Once home, Jazmine prepared a warm spot for her new guest. She heated some milk, set up a towel, and even brought out Moople to meet the new addition.
But something was off. Moople, usually friendly and curious, wouldn’t come near the animal. She stayed by the doorway, staring cautiously. Jazmine brushed it off—after all, animals sometimes needed time to adjust.
Noticing the Signs
She continued with her plan to bathe and feed the creature. But even as she handled it gently, it hissed, growled, and resisted every effort. If she hadn’t worn gloves, she would have been badly scratched.
Still, Jazmine was determined. She just needed to clean it up, feed it, and let it rest. But the animal had no interest in milk, cat food, or even tuna.
A Visit to the Vet
With few options left and growing concern, Jazmine decided to take the animal to the vet. She placed it into Moople’s travel crate, cautiously securing the latch.
All the while, the animal clawed and growled. “Maybe it’s just scared,” she reasoned. But deep down, she felt uneasy. She hoped the vet could give her answers—and perhaps offer treatment, if needed.
At the Clinic
The veterinary office was familiar and comforting. Jazmine had brought her pets here for years, and the vet always greeted her warmly.
But his welcoming smile faded as he saw what she was carrying. His brow rose in curiosity. “That’s a new face. What kind of cat is it?”
A Closer Look
He gestured for her to place the crate on the exam table. Jazmine laughed nervously, “He’s a bit feisty.”
The vet leaned in for a closer look, peering through the crate’s door. “Feisty, indeed,” he said cautiously. Then Jazmine opened the latch.
Alarming Behavior
In a flash, the animal sprang from the crate, hissing and baring its sharp teeth at the vet.
“He’s been like this all morning,” Jazmine explained, trying to keep calm. But the vet’s expression turned serious.
“You said this was a cat?”
“Yes,” Jazmine answered, now unsure of herself.
An Urgent Warning
“Mrs. McKinley,” he said firmly, “that is not a cat.”
He took a step back. “I need you to back away slowly. No sudden movements—especially if you care about keeping your eyesight.”
“What?” Jazmine asked, confused.
She looked again, truly looked—and for the first time, noticed how the creature’s proportions were different. Its ears were longer, snout more pronounced, and eyes sharper than any housecat she had ever seen.
A Dangerous Realization
The animal turned toward her, tail stiff and posture threatening. In that moment, everything became clear. She had not picked up a stray cat. This animal was something else entirely—something wild.
And she had unknowingly brought it into her home, near her other pet, and had handled it without understanding the danger.
A Close Call
The vet quickly retrieved a thick towel and gloves, working to contain the animal as gently as possible. He nodded to his assistant, who stepped in with a reinforced crate. Together, they managed to secure the creature without harm.
Once the room was safe again, the vet turned to Jazmine. “I believe you found a young bobcat. You’re incredibly lucky it didn’t do more damage.”
Jazmine stood speechless. A bobcat? In her neighborhood park?
Lessons Learned
The vet assured her that the local wildlife center would be contacted to provide appropriate care and release for the animal. “You did the right thing bringing it in,” he said, “but next time, let’s be absolutely sure before bringing something wild into your home.”
Jazmine nodded slowly. The experience had shaken her—but she was thankful that no one, including the animal, had been seriously harmed.
A Note of Caution
That evening, she shared the story with her husband Denis, who was stunned. Moople, still wary, gave her a wide berth for the rest of the day.
Jazmine knew one thing for certain—what started as a well-meaning gesture had quickly become a lesson in caution. And moving forward, she’d think twice before bringing home a new “pet.”
